Anniversary Coffee Share

Good morning, Everyone. How is your coffee on this blustery wet morning? Matt and I are at Davis Park; a cozy beach community on Fire Island (just a quick boat ride across the Great South Bay). We are staying in our friend’s cottage for the weekend overlooking the ocean.

There is no better place to be than the beach. The endless sky, thundering crash of the ocean and constant sea breeze bring rhythm and calm to my being. Petty thoughts and the to-do clutter take a back-burner position. The needs of the day are basic; a beach walk, writing time, visiting friends, marveling at the beauty, a bit of food and wine and, of course, coffee.

Yesterday the wind was more than blustery. It was downright howling, whipping the ocean into a frenzy. I could not get into the wild surf. It was a bit cold as well. Soon.

Matt and I are celebrating our 40 year Wedding Anniversary. I keep saying we were children when we got married just three weeks after college graduation. We were. Together we took on grown-up responsibilities with naive exuberance. From the beginning, the pursuit of fun was always paramount. We were blessed to have our families near offering practical advice which we took in small doses. Our three daughters gave us reasons to keep on playing. They have been the best decisions we ever made. We worked, built homes, sailed, fished, carpooled, fretted, celebrated, raised a glass in joy and sorrow, tantrum over frustrations, and learn to compromise and prioritize. We’ve traded off being each other’s rock to get us through life trials. Marriage is a lot of work. Anything worthwhile is a lot of work.

Yet it does not seem like forty years. Although we have lost our hair color and gain pounds everywhere, I still feel we are a couple of kids pell-melling through life together collecting laughter and looking for the next adventure.

So here is to us. Forty years of living life with love and fun.
