Stories Served Around The Table

Presents

Creative Writing Workshops offer children of all ages avenues towards understanding and experiencing the creative writing processes. Personal essays, journaling, and storytelling compel students to take a chance and compose pieces that are salient to their perspective. Through prompts, the students write beyond the facts and chronicle events to create essays and storylines that are fun to write and a joy to read. The workshops include the editing and researching processes and review the value of kind critiques.  School author visits and professional development workshops are available live or through a virtual platform.

Stories Served Around The Table Creative Writing Workshops are available NOW:

Becoming America’s Stories Author Presentation takes students on a writer’s journey through developing the historical fiction series. The Heart of Bakers and Artists and The Dreams of Singers and Sluggers are set in the Lower East Side of New York City, 1911. The streets teemed with millions of immigrants all vying for their American dream. It was a time of reform that shaped our nation into today. While history unfolded, children grew up in the crowded tenements among the changes. The books follow the stories of a girl, Lily Taglia, and her family as they assimilate their Sicilian culture and become part of America’s stories. Discover how the author researched and collected material to create believable and compelling stories. The author will also read a chapter from a requested book, lead inclusive and welcoming group discussions, and answer questions about the books.

Grand Prompts to Ask Your Grands Writer’s Workshop presents the core of storytelling. Compelling personal experience stories, tales told around the dinner table or in the cafeteria, and reminiscences of people who touched our lives all have a voice that draws a listener/reader into the journey. Students will have the opportunity to interview, write short narratives, employ editing tactics, and participate in a kind-kritique session. Inclusive group discussion and welcoming participation are essential elements to the workshop.

Journal On! A Writer’s Journaling Workshop presents the value of daily journal practice for both students and teachers. Journal writing is a creative outlet. With practice, the written words paint the pictures and feel the emotions of the moments. Memories stir. Reflection reveals paths, solutions, and gratitude. Storytelling is born. Students will be guided with prompts and strategies to create a means to fit journal writing into their day. Inclusive group discussions and welcoming participation are essential elements to this workshop.

Hope you are hungry. Becoming America’s Food Stories recalls the tales that have been told around my family’s dinner table. The histories explain the motivations over bowls of macaroni, antics play out while slurping soup, and laughter echoes throughout the dining room. Pull up a seat. There’s always room.
The Heart of Bakers and Artists is set in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, 1911. The story follows nine-year-old Lily, an American-born child of Sicilian immigrants, who wants to prove she is not a little kid. To be a big kid in the crowded tenement neighborhoods, she must tackle bigotry, bullies, disasters, dotty bakers, and learn to cross the street by herself
The Dreams of Singers and Sluggers picks up where The Heart of Bakers and Artists left off.Lily has big dreams to sing out with her powerful voice, but must do EVERYTHING, since Mama fell into a deep depression, the baby is sick, and the “Black Hand” terrorizes the neighborhood, threatening her chance to sing at the New York Highlanders Fourth of July baseball game.
Antoinette Truglio Martin is the author of Hug Everyone You Know: A Year of Community, Courage, and Cancer. The memoir is a wimpy patient’s journey through her first year of breast cancer treatment.
