It is after Labor Day. Children and teachers are back at school in my little corner of the world. Although I retired six years ago, I still believe that the day after Labor Day is New Year’s Day, bringing feelings of renewal and resolutions. I’m not back in the classroom or speech therapy closet, yet I want to get back to work.
This summer proved to be cluttered with obligations, roadblocks, and non-negotiable event participation. Writing took a hiatus. Reading too. My novella series hit a wall. I am not sure what I need at this point besides letting the 3-5 chapters I wrote marinate. I’ve slacked off on writing family stories, and posting on Substack, WordPress, Facebook and Instagram. Then there is the push to schedule author visits in the schools—something I really love to do.
One thing I have missed is journal writing. I am so scattered without writing daily observations, recordings of what is looping in my head, and stating gratitude on paper. I need to get back to journaling.
I replanted my favorite pens in a mug, and there is a dog-eared marker in the journal I started in January. Here is where I begin again, hopefully a little wiser and productive. How to keep me accountable?
I decided to rethink/revive/redo the Journal On! Prompt Boards. September 2025 Prompt Board is ready to share.

The US National Days Calendar and the seasons of North America inspired the ideas. While many of the holidays and dates reflect North American and United States observances, the prompts are universal. Themes explore food, animals, nature, family, friends, and social topics. I can choose three prompt boxes in a row, like a tic-tac-toe game, or mix them up to suit my creative mood. Some may make it to social media posting.
I believe the prompts are engaging for children of all ages. The Journal On! Prompt Boards can spark creative thinking and encourage meaningful expressive writing.
