I grew up in a large family. Although I am the eldest, I do not remember being an only child, nor do I remember quiet. There was always something happening and noise was always part of the happening.
My quiet place was in a cattail field next to our house in Sayville. The cattails grew well above kid-heights, so it was easy to find a secluded space away from tag-along sisters and mom’s demands. I would carefully walk through, trying not to make an obvious path. I usually brought notebook to scribble terrible poetry or finish a story. Sometimes I carried a small bag with a ball of yarn and crochet project. Mostly, I’d just sit, listening to the nearby bay lapping against bulkheads. I’d notice the clouds and the sway of the cattails’ fuzzy tops. I would not stay too long. After all, I was used to noise and commotions. My quiet place lasted about two years. The lots were bought and cleared. Soon, the quiet space had several new houses.

My theme for the 2022 AtoZ Blog Challenge is titled Grand Prompts To Ask Your Grands. Each day in April I will present a conversation starter/journal prompt to ask your parents, grandparents, aunts, older neighbors, co-workers, yourself…you get the idea. The questions are meant to forge connections between and within generations and inspire storytelling and journaling.

I grew up with lots of quiet spaces being an only child… maybe that’s why I like quiet now. I do often am jealous in others who have siblings… wondering what I’ve missed.

Funny how I also wonder what I missed not being an only where there would be a lot of attention and sole considerations.

We all need that quiet place once in a while. Quite seems to be the famous title today in a to z…

I long for peace & quiet and even a bit of solitude at times, but sadly I live in the middle of a busy town and there’s little of any of that stuff to be had 😦

I loved cattails as a child. Something about them was so interesting. Sadly, I think most, if not all, the places I used to go and see them have been replaced with housing as well.

I grew up in a relatively quiet family. My husband grew up with lots of bustle and (positive) noise. Together we have made a nice blend of the two (but definitely leaning toward the quiet)! 😀
