It was amazing! I recently finished reading The Heart of Bakers and Artists and continued to wonder about the characters long after I had turned the final page. The Dreams of Singers and Sluggers was the perfect solution. It continued the story of 9 (almost 10) year old Lily and her Sicilian immigrant family living in New York’s lower east side. Partly based on the author’s family stories that she absorbed around their kitchen table, the sights, sounds, fears, struggles, joys and community of new Americans in the early 1900s were made breathtakingly real.
Aimed at middle-grade readers, this is a beautiful book for families to share. It is also a fantastic resource for teachers and librarians.
