A Mid July Sunday Coffee

Good morning, Everyone. It is a sultry Sunday morning here on the south shore of Long Island. Thunderstorms threaten, but somehow my little corner of the world is missing the deluge. Grab your brew. Let’s catch up.

If we were having coffee together, I’d tell you my husband, Matt, has been diligently weeding, waging war on tomato fungus, and watering patio flower pots and gardens. All a hydrangea has to do is slightly fold a few leaves, and he is out there with the garden hose. It pays off. His efforts yield a spectacular bounty.

Check out this huge mushroom that grew in the middle of the lawn. It is called “chicken of the woods” and although it is “edible”, we are not trying it.

If we were having coffee together, I would tell you I am having a busy sailing season. Our Bella Vela, an eighteen foot Hershoff catboat, has been a joy. Last year we missed sailing her because of several setbacks. We are making up for it this season when the weather and wind cooperate. I continue to crew on the Nellie Bly, an all women sail team, on Tuesday nights. It is a friendly regatta, and the comrade is fabulous. On Wednesday nights, I am on the bay again in the Women’s Second Wind Sunfish series. Sunfish are thirteen foot monohull sailboats that are easy to rig and sail solo. I’ve had a Sunfish since I was twelve years old. I am pretty bruised and sore by the end of the night, but it has been a LOT of fun!

If we were having coffee together, I would ask you if you had seen The Wishes of Sisters and Sluggers cover reveal. No? Yes? Here is an encore showing. What do you think?

If we were having coffee together, I would pour myself another cup of coffee and get moving on rolling out meatballs and setting up sauce for Sunday dinner at Mom’s.

How have you been? I hope all is well, safe and kind with you.

Have a good week, Everyone. Make it Funtastic!

Great BIG Thanks and appreciation go out to Natalie the Explorer who keeps the Weekend Coffee Share percolating.

Becoming America’s Food Stories

Hope you are hungry. Becoming America’s Food Stories recalls the tales that have been told around my family’s dinner table. The histories explain the motivations over bowls of macaroni, antics play out while slurping soup, and laughter echoes throughout the dining room. Pull up a seat. There’s always room.
The Heart of Bakers and Artists is set in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, 1911. The story follows nine-year-old Lily, an American-born child of Sicilian immigrants, who wants to prove she is not a little kid. To be a big kid in the crowded tenement neighborhoods, she must tackle bigotry, bullies, disasters, dotty bakers, and learn to cross the street by herself
The Dreams of Singers and Sluggers picks up where The Heart of Bakers and Artists left off.Lily has big dreams to sing out with her powerful voice, but must do EVERYTHING, since Mama fell into a deep depression, the baby is sick, and the “Black Hand” terrorizes the neighborhood, threatening her chance to sing at the New York Highlanders Fourth of July baseball game.
Antoinette Truglio Martin is the author of Hug Everyone You Know: A Year of Community, Courage, and Cancer. The memoir is a wimpy patient’s journey through her first year of breast cancer treatment.

  1. Wow. THat mushroom is huge. I’ll cook it….I’ll help roll meatballs too. My mom tells stories of making tiny meatballs with her Nonna for Italian wedding soup and if they weren’t perfect, her nonna would smash them, and they had to start over…haha. Love your yard and flowers.
